57fe91f303 Five records become one, and every citation lands somewhere
FIX.org, NEXT.md, DISCUSS.org, docs/DISCUSS.md and the session handoff at the
root are one TODO.org now: 293 entries under seven subsystem headings, each
carrying an org keyword that says where it stands. A DONE entry is a few lines
saying what was decided and what that rules out; the reasoning that would not
compress — the embedding spike and the four reports the hand-written x86
backend was built from — moved into docs/BUILT.md instead, and its entries
point there in one line.

Every entry was checked against the tree before it got a keyword, and the
prose was wrong in both directions. Things the deleted files called open were
built: the first-evaluation stall, main being redefinable, macro parameter
lists, the type-limit constants, the array constructors, the byte fills,
inc/dec, the discard's fontification, the Emacs buffers, rt_die's _exit, the
backtrace surface, and the acceptance failure that could print and still exit
zero. Things they called done were not: the backend reports' no-plan buckets
had gone stale in the other direction, the value-dependent defvar was
superseded rather than built, and macro-expansion source locations are on an
unmerged lane, so that entry is NEXT and names the branch.

Every comment that cited one of the five by name now cites a heading that
exists, in TODO.org or in docs/BUILT.md. The session reports under
docs/handoffs/ keep naming the files they worked on, because rewriting them
would falsify what those sessions did; each carries a note saying where the
content went.

2572f0a537 An fn sees the locals it was written among, and Fn says so in its type
spec-memory.md's case 2, capture by value into a stack environment, and
the calling convention the author's rulings asked for.

    (Fn [i32] i32) captures; {code, env}; the common case
(CFn [i32] i32) the bare address; one word; cannot capture

A local of the enclosing function that an fn names is copied into a
struct the checker synthesises, held in a slot of that function's frame,
and the value carries its address; the lifted body reads the copies back
into named slots of its own, once, at entry. So the name in the body
means what the local held at the instant the value was made --
fn-capture.flan changes the local through a pointer after the value
exists and the fn still answers with the old one.

Two types rather than a uniform environment parameter: "while it's dyn
first, static side should never have to pay the price for the existence
of the dyn side... if you fully opt out, for instance, using --no-gc
flag, then we should be operating under Odin/C semantics and never paying
any runtime costs." The environment is declared by exactly the bodies an
(Fn ...) value can reach -- a lifted literal in an Fn position, every
handler clause, and the widening thunks -- and by nothing else. An
ordinary defn emits the signature it always did; calc-me and fourteen
corpus programs were diffed to say so.

CFn, because the C carries information: a value with no environment is
the only kind that could ever cross to C, and under the --no-conditions
direction FIX.org records it becomes literally a C function pointer. It
is not that today -- a declare cannot take a function type at all -- and
crossable's refusal says so where a reader would otherwise be misled.
Nobody needs CFn: Fn accepts everything, and the commonest reason to
reach for the narrow one is that a *named* function handed to an Fn pays
a hop through the widening thunk where a CFn is a direct call.

That thunk is one small function per distinct signature widened, which
reads the bare address back out of the environment and calls it. The
cheaper trick -- the environment last, ignored by a body that never
declared it -- is legal under SysV and is a trap under wasm32's
call_indirect, which compares the signature at the call. Every indirect
call is exactly typed now.

A handler clause captures the same way and is sound with nothing left
over: its frame is popped by the body that pushed it. What is refused
there is a *store* into a captured name -- it is a copy, and writing to
it would leave the local as it was.

And the other half, which is what "non-escaping" means: a value carrying
an environment may be called, passed down and let-bound, and may not be
returned, stored, pointed at or pushed into a container. A parameter of
type Fn is treated as one, which answers "passed to something that stores
it" with no interprocedural analysis -- the store is refused inside the
callee. Everything of type CFn is clean for free, which is the second
thing having two types buys. Every refusal names case 3, the environment
the collector owns.

Two pre-existing bugs fell out on the way. A lifted fn asked for Fnval,
so `flan reload' on any function containing an fn literal died at llc
with an undefined cell; it takes Flanfn now, which is the choice a
handler clause always made. And a redefinition module now carries its
own hidden copy of every thunk it names, which is the same bug shape
caught before it shipped.

d6fc15474b The count is length, so len is a name a program can have
The author: "I think I prefer length over len, because then I'll use len as
the variable name". One arm in check.ml, one row in the table beside it, and
every (len x) in lib, test, examples, vendor, spike, docs, web, emacs,
plan.org and NEXT.md rewritten.

Shadowing and builtin/ had already taken most of the sting out: a (defn len
...) was legal and won in its own file, and builtin/len reached past it. What
was left is that len was still a builtin — the defn earned a warning, and a
wrapper had to say builtin/ at every inner call. Now there is nothing under
the short name: len is an ordinary identifier in every position, which is
what (let [len (length xs)] ...) wants.

length takes over as shadowing's worked example rather than the feature
losing one. shadow-builtin.flan, builtin-qualified.flan, pkgs/shadowed and the
builtin/ rows in test_flan move to it and go on testing shadowing.

A call to a len nothing defines is answered where an unknown function is,
after every table and after the shadowing guard, so a program with its own len
never reaches it. The sentence is said rather than guessed at — len and length
are three edits apart and the did-you-mean's net is one — and the call is
written back out through spell_arg, as-slice's spelling lifted out of it and
now shared, so what is printed compiles.

sand.flan:33 still calls the old name and is the author's to change; until it
does, test_acceptance and test_session abort there. Both were run green
against a copy with that one line changed. FIX.org says so.

2d8d9cd5a8 dotimes counts from where you say, and can count down
"Is there a way to do dotimes or a loop in reverse?" — the answer was a
hand-written let plus set. Now it is (dotimes [i 9 -1 -1]).

Three arities: [i n], [i start stop], [i start stop step]. The stop is
exclusive in all of them, so [i 0 n] is [i n] — one rule, not two — and a
negative step counts down, testing with > instead of <.

A literal step of 0 is refused where it is written. One that is only a value
cannot be, so the condition asks the sign first and 0 falls out of it as a
loop that runs no times: terminating and deterministic, and free, because a
literal step still emits the single comparison it always did.

Each bound is evaluated once, left to right, before the counter exists: the
start into the counter, the stop into the hidden slot it always had, the
step into one of its own unless it is a literal.

Still a special form, still a Let and a While with the step in the latch, so
neither backend learned anything — the new program prints the same thing
under --x86 and at -O0. load.ml's Form-level walk had to learn more than one
bound for the same reason parse.ml did; it is part of this feature and not a
bug that was sitting there, because before this a three-bound dotimes was a
parse error long before that walk could reach it.

a4c6b996ff def re-runs its initialiser, and defvar is renamed defonce
The trio the author decided on 2026-09-20 is now all built: def is CL's
defparameter — its initialiser runs on every daemon re-run, unguarded, so
an edited initialiser repaints the same storage on C-c C-c plus re-run —
defonce (Clojure's name for CL's defvar, per the author) initialises once
behind the .init~once. flag, and defconst stays the image.

One parse arm reads both forms; the difference is Ast.reinit, carried to
Tast.global's grerun. Emit.startup_plan gives a def no guard flag, and
Check.check_global lifts every def initialiser — zero and literal
included — into global/<n>, so the host's startup reaches it through the
function cell and a re-evaluated def swaps it (Session's def_inits;
Emit.redefinition declares the cell for a non-sibling target). The old
defvar spelling is refused with the rename and both compiling spellings,
and every program, test, doc and editor list is swept — except sand.flan,
the author's live WIP, whose seven defvar lines are flagged in FIX.org
and keep its three dependent tests red on this branch.

40d62e7643 builtin/name, the spelling a shadow cannot take away
A defn named after a builtin wins for its whole file, and until now that
was the end of it: the builtin had no remaining spelling, so a defn that
meant to wrap one was unbounded recursion. builtin/len is the builtin len
wherever it is written, shadowed or not.

The qualifier is the package one's, and builtin is reserved rather than
resolved: Load refuses it as an import alias, Check refuses it as a
declaration's name, and those two doors are the only ways a qualifier can
be made. named_call and var each strip the prefix and re-enter with a flag
that the shadowing guard consults, so every arm below sees the bare name
and refuses in the builtin's own words.

The shadow warning now names the escape in its second half.

d4def945a9 An array is a value you can write, not a place you have to fill first
DISCUSS.org's "need a value-producing array constructor": the author
wanted grid filled with 255 as part of its declaration and could not
write it. (array n T) produces the zeroed array only, and dotimes is
Unit, so it can mutate a place that already exists but cannot be the
initialiser expression -- which has to produce the whole value in one
go. The grid was declared zeroed and filled in main instead.

Two forms, both expressions, both any rank:

(array-fill [rows cols] 255) every element that value
(array-gen [rows cols] cell) every element (cell i j)

Spelled apart rather than one form dispatching on the third element's
type, because an array *of* function values is a thing to want and one
form would have to decide whether (array-fill [4] f) meant four copies
of f or four calls of it.

The dimensions are read in Parse, and that is the whole reason they are
recognised there: handed through as an ordinary call, [rows cols] is an
array literal of two names, and where those names are defconsts it is a
perfectly good two-element array of integers -- the wrong reading, and a
silent one. Read in Parse they are the same len the [n T] type spelling
takes, resolved by the same array_len, with one extra condition of their
own: the fill counts in i32 like every index in the language, so a
dimension no i32 can reach has no loop that could end.

The lowering is a loop over a slot, not an aggregate. Tast.Arr is the
node the backends have and both build it element by element from a list
as long as the array; a fill of [600 [800 u8]] is half a million
elements and there is no list to be had. So these bind the array to a
slot, zero it, run one While per dimension writing through Set of a
Pindex, and answer with the slot -- While, Set and Pindex, which is the
argument check_loop already makes for recur. Nothing new reaches a
backend and all three get the form with no edit. The value stays
value-like: the slot is the form's own, and the Local at the end copies
out the way any array-typed expression does.

Row-major is pinned, not incidental: the first dimension is the
outermost loop, and a generator that counts observes it. The fill value
and the generator value are each bound once before any loop starts, so
(array-fill [n] (next-id)) is one call and n copies of its answer.

What falls out for the defvar the note was written about, and neither
half is a carve-out:

(defvar grid [rows [cols u8]] (array-fill [rows cols] 255))

is the spelling that works -- a typed global with a computed
initialiser, which is the startup-lifted path with the init-once guard
that defvar already had, so the fill runs once and the value survives a
re-run like any other computed one. The three-element spelling means
what the 2026-09-20 rule says it means: not a type, so a dyn global, and
a typed fixed array crosses into dyn only as a view of storage that
outlives the view. A freshly built array is a temporary, so it is
refused -- by the element rule where the elements are themselves an
array, by the lifetime rule where they are one of the three scalars a
view carries. Both refusals are the ones any other temporary gets.

The type an array-fill builds never goes through resolve, so resolve's
own guard is asked again where it is built: a fixed array of function
values would be zeroed, and a zeroed function value is a null pointer.

c1b18cb181 Two struct spellings the parser was never able to decide
A bare {.field v} had its refusal in Parse.expr, before any checking, so a
defn whose return type was the only place the struct's name appeared could
not build one. The refusal moves to Check: Parse builds an Ast.Bare out of
the same struct_fields the named form uses, and check_bare reads the type
name off the expectation and hands that very list to check_struct. ZII, the
unknown-field refusal and the duplicate-field refusal are therefore not
copies of the named form's rules but the named form's rules.

Braces at a dyn want are the dyn map literal and stay exactly that. A
.field-keyed brace was never part of that spelling, and at a dyn want it is
refused by name rather than given a second meaning.

(Cell 1 2) is the other half, and it is character-for-character an ordinary
call, so only the symbol table separates them. It is decided on the last arm
of named_call, after a local of function type, a generic and the function
table -- so a defclass constructor, which is a real defn, resolves above it
and is untouched. Arity is exact: ZII is what the braces do, and a positional
list cannot say which field it left out, so it is not allowed to leave one
out. The refusal names the first field it did not reach and points at the
spelling that does mean "zero the rest".

Both are gone before any backend sees them -- Tast.Make either way -- and the
three acceptance rows print the same lines to say so.

ea84394dd0 Three more: the return slot, the case payload, the missing collection
Ranks 13, 14 and 9.

A body form in the return slot was blamed at whatever leaf the type parser
gave up on — the [1] in [(defn f [x i32] (+ x 1))], three forms deep — where
the mistake is that the whole form is in the slot. The slot is blamed now and
the parser's own reason keeps its span as a note. Where the parser gave up on
the slot form itself the old shape stands, because a message like 'unit is
written (), not Unit' already names the right thing and leading with it is
better than restating it. The literal -- is an em dash now, like everything
else in the tree.

A one-field case binds the payload itself, so [(match s (Circle c) (.r c))]
reached for a field of an f64 and got a type fact. The binding carries what
the pattern made it, in words, derived at the arm from the case and the
subject; the refusal says the value is already in hand. Set by that path and
nowhere else, so every other binding's refusal says exactly what it said.

The missing collection asserted a thing and contradicted it in the same
sentence — 'is a directory named nosuch somewhere above X, and there is
none'. It states the rule and the two ends of the search instead. The bare
/. it printed was Filename.concat of a directory and a dot, and is cleaned
where the path is made absolute.

5a62770e52 Classes and generic functions, milestone 2's last item
A defclass is a named dyn map with a shape tag, and a generic function
dispatches on it two ways: CLOS's, where the dispatch value is the class
of the first argument, and Clojure's, where a body computes it. They are
one mechanism and not two — a class dispatcher is (class-of arg0) as the
dispatch function, which is what lets a method written for the class
point and one written for the value :point be the same branch.

    (defclass point [x y])
    (point 3 4) ; the constructor, positional
(class-of p) ; :point, or nil for anything else
    (defgeneric area [self] dyn)
    (defmethod area point [p] (* (get p :x) (get p :y)))
(defmulti describe [x] dyn (get x :kind))
    (defmethod describe :square [s] ...)
    (defmethod describe :else [s] ...)

A slot is a key in the instance's own map, so get, put and has-key? are
how one is read and written and no operation was added for any of it.
What the class adds is the tag, and the tag lives in the object's header
rather than in a reserved entry — the queue's note said a reserved key
and this departs from it, because a key would be counted by len, walked
by the renderer and compared by equality, so every instance would answer
a length one larger than its slot count and print a key nobody wrote. A
header field cannot be reached by get or put at all, so no user key can
collide with it. It costs nothing: the map arm of flan_obj's union grows
to the size the view arm already had, and sizeof(flan_obj) is unchanged.
It needs no tracing either — the tag is an interned keyword entry, which
is immortal and is not a collector object.

The tag shows up in exactly three places: class-of answers it, equality
compares it (two instances of one class compare by their slots; an
instance and a plain map with the same entries do not, which is
Clojure's answer for a record beside a map), and both renderers print it
— #point{ :x 1 :y 2}, Clojure's own spelling.

None of the four forms reaches the checker. lib/classes.ml turns the
whole declaration list into ordinary defns at the top of build_program,
the way Shim.expand already turns a declare-c into a declare plus a
defn: a class becomes its constructor, a generic becomes one function
whose body binds the dispatch value and compares it down a chain, and a
method becomes a branch of that chain. It is a pass and not a macro
because a macro sees one form and the generic's body is not decidable
until every method is in hand — a method may be written above its
generic, below it, or arrive at a reload an hour later.

That last case is why the method bodies are inlined rather than lifted.
A generic is exactly one top-level name, so adding a method to a running
program is the ordinary redefinition of one function, through the cell
every call site already goes through. session.ml names the generic
alongside the method's own declaration name for that reason. The cost,
recorded rather than hidden: a method is not separately callable and is
not a frame of its own.

A dispatch that finds no method signals NoMethod, a prelude struct
carrying the generic's name and the dispatch value that missed. A
condition and not a trap, because a miss is something a program can be
written to answer, and handler-case around the call is the shape. Its
value field is dyn, the first condition here with one; the per-type
descriptor an item-2 struct carries is what the collector reaches it by.
No restart is established at the miss, which is BoundsError's decision
taken for BoundsError's reason.

Both backends, identically: the two new runtime entry points are
declared in emit.ml and the x86 backend needs nothing, since a dyn call
is a dyn call there. Deferred and written down in FIX.org: inheritance,
multi-argument dispatch, :before/:after/:around, named-slot
construction, unknown-slot checking, and computed dispatch values.

a251dca67f handler-case is a handler-bind plus a transfer, and nothing more
The unwinding handler, which spec-conditions.md named and left unwritten while
it asked whether the thing should be a macro over the two operators that were
already here. It should. (handler-case B [(T [c] A)]) is checked as
(restart-case (handler-bind [(T [c] (invoke-restart 'R c))] B) (R [c T] A))
with R a name the form makes up for itself, which is Common Lisp's own
definition of the operator and means neither backend needed a line.

What that buys is not economy, it is the correctness of the parts nobody can
see. The defers between the signal and the form run, and the allocator a
with-allocator rebound is put back, because a transfer already does both for
every frame it leaves. The body and every clause agree on one type, because a
restart-case's body and clauses already do, and a clause that disagrees is
refused with the same message an if with disagreeing arms gets. A condition no
clause lists installs no frame that matches it and goes on outward untouched.
A clause sees the establishing function's locals, which a handler-bind clause
cannot, because a restart clause runs where it was written.

The body comes first and the clauses after it, the opposite of handler-bind's
order: one reads as something put around a body and the other as a body with
answers hung off the end of it. The restart the two halves meet over is named
after the function and numbered within it, and it has to be unique per form,
because two nested handler-cases sharing a name would have the inner frame
shadow the outer one and land a condition at the wrong place.

The refusals name handler-case rather than the machinery underneath it, which
is why check_handler_bind and the restart clauses now take the word the reader
wrote. A break loop entered under a handler-case still lists the made-up
restart, and taking it there is refused loudly rather than answered wrongly;
hiding it would mean a field in a frame layout spelled out in three files.

The survey program runs the same under LLVM, at -O0 and under --x86: normal
completion, a caught condition, one nobody listed passing through with the body
carrying on, both defers on the way out, the two nestings against handler-bind,
a clause that signals and is caught outside the form it belongs to, and a
with-allocator whose restore is on the transfer path.

ab82e46119 Dyn maps, keywords and nil land: milestone 2's first item
The dyn runtime gets a map object and an interned keyword, alongside the
vec it already had. {:a 1 :b s} is a map literal wherever a struct
literal isn't — the parser tells the two apart by whether the first form
in the braces is a .field symbol — and a bracket literal builds the
runtime's own vec rather than a typed array wherever a dyn is wanted, which
is what lets a map literal's values nest arrays and maps freely. get, put,
len and has-key? all learn a dyn-map arm alongside the typed-map one they
already had, and (keyword s) builds the same interned value a :foo literal
does, for a name that only exists at run time. nil is now a literal, the
dyn absence value that get answers for a key a map does not hold.

On the runtime side, flan_dyn.c gets an OBJ_MAP that shares the vec's
storage arm and doubles its accounting, a linear-scan intern table for
keywords that makes equality an identity compare, and structural map
equality by lookup rather than position. The marker traces a map's
interleaved keys and values the same way it already traced a vec.

edn/read and its callers move off the old (Option Value) union entirely:
a document is plain dyn now, sets are dyn maps to true, and arena-edn.flan
is retired along with the union it demonstrated. The acceptance suite's
edn-read and json rows were recaptured against the new shape, and a new
dyn-map.flan program exercises the map and keyword operations end to end,
including a 200k-iteration churn loop against a rooted map that runs
GC for real, across the LLVM, -O0 and x86 rows, and under the sanitizer.

Keywords are dyn everywhere an enum isn't expected, which changed what a
couple of existing checker tests actually see refused; both were updated
to the sentence the checker gives now rather than the one it used to.

1d74a4f694 Merge: a macro reads the file, and the struct is the file's shape 2026-09-19 09:58:50 +07:00
1422d4faf3 defedn: the struct a data file implies, and a reader for it
(edn/defedn Tileset "assets/tileset.edn") reads the file while the program is
being compiled, derives the struct its shape implies, and emits that struct
with a reader over the tokenizer next door. From there (.texture-path data) is
a field load: no Value, no match, no runtime tag, nothing looked up by name.

The real game file is the case it was built against, and its set of [x y] pairs
is why a vector inside a set becomes a fixed array rather than a Vec — a set is
this repo's (Map T bool), so its elements are map keys, and [2 i64] is one
where (Vec i64) is not.

Two things found while writing it. A quasiquote inside a package's ordinary
function was not qualified — only a defmacro's body goes through
qualify_macro — so a (defn ... [c (Ptr Cursor)] ...) emitted from a derivation
helper reached the importer naming a type it had never heard of. The name
survives into a string, which is the property the expander depends on and
exactly what puts it out of a rename's reach; load.ml now qualifies a literal
(Form.Sym {.s "..."}) naming something the package owns. Until a package's
macros could call the package's functions there was no helper that built code,
so this could not have shown before.

And (vec-new) and (map-new) have to be told what they build by naming a type,
which (Vec i64) and [2 i64] have no way to be. Both fall back to what the
context wants and a signature is a type position, so each collection gets a
one-line constructor stating its type. The reader reads better for it.

3e68089cde A parameter with no type is dyn, decided where the type names are all known
The type itself, the ABI its operations call into, and the one decision the
feature could not avoid: (defn f [x y]) is one parameter or two, and which one
depends on whether y names a type.

Parse does not decide it. That lookup is the one its defn comment records being
removed for being wrong twice in one day -- the set of type names is incomplete
at parse time by construction, and macros generating definitions is what
widened the failure. So the vector is carried undecided, as Ast.pitems, and
paired in Check, after every file is loaded, every macro expanded and every
header imported. The set is complete there. It is not complete across time, and
the comment says so: a defstruct written later changes a signature with no edit
to the function.

The return slot stays mandatory and dyn is written out in it. The ambiguity
there has no syntactic resolution at all -- a capitalised head in a list is both
a type application and a struct literal -- so the third state the parameters
needed does not exist for the return type, and ret = None goes on meaning Unit.

What the feature costs, and what is taken back: a slot with no type used to be a
syntax error, so a mistyped type now reads as an extra parameter with no
diagnostic. A name within one edit of a type's gets the resolver's own
did-you-mean, and an unknown capitalised name is reported as the unknown type it
is -- not one parameter in the corpus is capitalised. A lowercase name
resembling no type is the feature working, and is the residual.

The x86 backend refuses dyn by name; both callers already name --llvm, and the
daemon takes that backend by default, so this is the first thing a user of dyn
sees. The JS dialect refuses it too, for the opposite reason -- every value
there is already dynamic and what is missing is only the lowering.

runtime/flan_dyn.h is the fixed ABI. flan_dyn_stub.c stands in until the real
collector lands and says in its header that it verifies nothing about roots.

32ff350001 A macro may call its package, and may read a file at the call site's path
Two things a type provider needs and neither of which a macro could do.

A package macro could not call its own package's functions. Load already
renamed the body so that (next c) reads (edn/next c) — the intent was written
down — and the module was then compiled from the prelude and the defmacros
alone, so the call arrived at the checker as "the call edn/next into an
imported package". The declarations now travel beside the macros in
Parse.imported_decls, trimmed in Macro.compile to what the macro bodies
actually reach. raylib's five with-* are pure quasiquote, so nothing of raylib
is reachable and its module is the one it always was — which matters, because
raylib's declarations are declares against a library a macro module has no
linker argument for.

And a macro had no way to resolve a path. (embed "assets/x.edn") resolves
against the directory of the source file the form is written in; a macro knows
the path it was handed and not what it is relative to, because a Form carries
no location. So the compiler pokes the call site's directory into two C
symbols before every expansion and (macro-slurp "...") joins the two. C data
and not a Flan global: the module is emitted with hidden visibility and only
the flan.macro.* thunks stay exported.

None rather than a condition, which is why this is not slurp: a condition
signalled inside an expansion goes through the module's own copy of the
runtime, and that is the failure Build.macro_module's hidden note measured.

cc2cfa175b Sets are read, and the reader that answers a Value is the package's
The tokenizer refused #{} because "it needs a hash set to even
represent" — which is a claim about a reader, and a tokenizer represents
nothing. #{ now pushes } on the same balance stack { does, there is one
new token kind and no new closer, and err-set is gone rather than kept
with a message it no longer earns. skip-value needed nothing: it is
written against the depth and not against the kinds.

The dynamic reader moves out of test/programs/arena-edn.flan and into
vendor/edn/read.flan as (edn/read bytes), answering an (Option Value)
against whichever allocator the caller bound. Two decisions are written
down where they are made:

  * a set is a Value.Set holding a deduplicated (Vec Value), because
(Map Value bool) does not typecheck — keyable refuses a key holding
a Vec or a Map — and restricting elements to keyable Values would
refuse #{[0 0] [1 0]}, which is the file this was built for. Insert
    is O(n) against a structural value=?, so building the tileset's 54
    pairs is 1458 comparisons, once.
  * a Value copies every string into the allocator where a Token stays
a view. A view handed back out of the function that owns the buffer
is a dangling pointer, and free-all would not even take it. Odin's
json parser clones for the same reason.

An imported defdata was a refusal in load.ml — "not implemented yet
(milestone 4)" — and it had to go first. It is the type's name plus the
Type. half of a constructor symbol, which arrives as a Var node when the
case has no fields and a Struct node when it has; a match pattern needed
nothing, because a case resolves against the scrutinee's type and was
never a top-level name. programs/pkg-data.flan is that on its own.

programs/edn-read.flan reads assets/edn/tileset.edn, which is the
editor's real output: :texture-path and a :selected-cells of 54 integer
pairs, with no type declared for any of it. It also overwrites the
source buffer in place after reading and prints the document back, which
is the copy contract asserted rather than described.

6cc94e00d6 defunion is C's union, and reading the member you did not write is defined
The name freed up by the rename now means what C means by it: the members
overlay one storage, the size is the largest of them, the alignment the
strictest, and nothing anywhere records which one was written. It serves
two things that wanted it. Binding a C header means holding the union the
library holds and reading whichever member the library's own tag says is
live -- a tag Flan cannot see, because the rule relating them is prose in
a manual. Overlaying an f32 on a u32 to look at its bits is the other,
and it is the same read.

So that read is defined rather than refused. This is the one place in the
checker where bytes win over safety on purpose, and the alternative was
not a safer language, it was no feature: type punning *is* reading the
member that was not written. The promise is the one C's implementations
make and C's standard does not -- the layout is the target's, the bytes
are the bytes, a read is a reinterpretation of them -- and what is not
promised is anything about bytes nobody wrote, where a member wider than
the one last stored reads a tail that is indeterminate exactly as a
struct's padding is. ZII narrows that to almost nothing: a union starts
all-bytes-zero unless uninit says otherwise.

uninit on one is allowed, unlike on a defdata. The refusal there was
never about garbage; it is that a tag steers, and a tag no case names
falls past every comparison in a match into a block LLVM may treat as
unreachable. An untagged union steers nothing.

Which is also why three things are refused, each for a reason that does
not expire with a milestone. No move-only member: nothing knows which
member is live, so nothing can tear one down, and unlike the struct and
defdata refusals this is not waiting on recursive teardown -- there is no
fact for teardown to read. No bool at any depth: an i1 loaded from a byte
that is neither 0 nor 1 is a value the optimiser may assume cannot exist,
and a union is the only type that can produce one. No defdata at any
depth, for the reason uninit gives, arriving the other way round. An
Option member is fine and the walk says why: its match is a tag test and
a branch, not a chain with an unreachable tail.

Two members in one literal, a match on a union, a union map key and a
member written into a global initialiser are each refused by name.

A union is a field list whose every offset is zero, so it travels as a
Tast.structure and the checker, the emitter and the x86 backend each grow
one table rather than one shape. A value is a zeroed temporary and a
store -- Set over Pfield, which every backend already has -- so there is
no new IR node and no layout rule spelled out a second time per backend.
The LLVM type is the blob clang gives a union, the DWARF is
DW_TAG_union_type with every member at zero, and the printer names the
type and does not walk it: it cannot know which member is live, and one
of them may be a pointer.

cimport can now check what it could not. A C record holding a union
member was not recorded at all, so the defstruct beside it went unchecked
rather than checked wrongly; a named union member resolves to a defunion
now and the whole record is compared field by field. The defunion itself
is compared against the header's union as a set and not in order --
every member is at offset zero, so a permuted one is the same type and
reporting it would be a finding that is not one -- while a member the
header has and Flan lacks is reported, because that is what changes the
size. A defunion against a C struct, or a defstruct against a C union,
is reported in both directions. An anonymous union member is still
skipped, and the comment now says that the gap is on the Flan side:
there is nothing to declare.

ff2c949361 The tagged sum is defdata, and the old spelling is an error by name
Flan's tagged sum has been spelled defunion since it landed, which was
accurate right up until the language wanted C's untagged union as well.
Both cannot be called the same thing, and the tagged one is the one with
an alternative name that says what it is: a case, its fields, and a tag
that steers which case is live is a data type, not a union.

So the form is defdata everywhere -- the parser, the AST, the checker,
both backends, the prelude's Form, the editor's font-locking and imenu,
the docs and every .flan file in the tree. The internal vocabulary moves
with it: Tast.union is Tast.data, uname is dname, the tables the checker
and the emitter keep are datas. Leaving them would have inverted the
words permanently, with surface defunion meaning one thing and
env.unions meaning the other, which is exactly the kind of drift the
comments in those files exist to prevent. What did not move is case,
variant and vfields: a tagged sum still has cases, and it still has one
live at a time.

defunion is not kept as an alias. An alias would compile the day the
untagged form lands and mean the opposite of what it used to -- the same
silent misparse that made defn's return type mandatory, and worse,
because the reader would have no reason to look. The old spelling is a
named refusal instead, parse/defunion-renamed, which says what it is now
called and that the name is reserved for something else. It fires on the
head alone, so (defunion U [A B]) -- which would otherwise have parsed
cleanly as one field A of type B -- is refused with the rest.

dd3611f97d An edited package macro reloads as its new body, not its old one
Both unions kept the wrong side. macro_union keeps the left on a name
collision, and both callers had the older set on the left: Load.program
put the ambient set ahead of the packages it had just resolved, and
Session put the copy it had been holding since creation ahead of what
Load handed back. So editing a macro in a package and reloading the file
that imports it went on expanding the old body -- and said nothing,
which in this area is the failure that costs the most to find.

Two tests, because the two unions are reached by different paths: the
reload itself, and the C-c C-c after it, which reads the set the session
kept rather than the one Load just supplied. Each fails on its own if
only the other order is put back.

Also written down, and not fixed: C-x C-e expands no macros at all.
Parse.expr never calls the expander, so (unless ...) as a bare
expression is as much an unknown name as (mac/twice 4) -- the prelude
fails there too, which is what says it is an older gap. Changing it
changes what an expression evaluation means.

And the cost note is cut back to what was measured. Four macro modules
where the file's own macros leave two is what the cache shows; why four
is not settled and no longer claimed.

1898a3157d Macros come from a package now, and the refusal's reason was wrong
Load.program takes forms: it reads the import forms, resolves them with the
one resolver it always had, and parses the file with the packages' macros in
front of it. The refusal said this needed a second import resolver at the Form
level. It did not notice that the file being compiled is parsed before Load
runs too, so no shape of the feature could have left import resolution where
it was.

Names arrive qualified, as a defn's do. (mac/twice 4) is a call and (twice 4)
is an unknown name.

Stopped mid-task: dune test was never run and the acceptance wiring is
unfinished. HANDOFF-macros.md has what is left.

68625a535e A bindings gap stops a build, and says which file to edit 2026-09-13 14:34:19 +07:00
4ff3e9a922 A finding about the bindings file is not a reason to stop a build
check_constants makes two kinds of finding and they were treated alike.
A value that does not match, or a C name the header does not have, is
the library contradicting the package and stops a build the way a
permuted defstruct does. An enum nobody mapped and a rule that reaches
nothing are about the package's own bindings file -- real, and worth
fixing, but telling a lane that added a defenum to go and edit a config
in a message shaped like "your layout is wrong" is the wrong thing to
fail a build with. Those gate generate-c, where that file is edited.

Also: a const prefix now counts as reaching a name before an explicit
constant line is consulted, so a rule whose every match is also spelled
out by hand is not reported as matching nothing.
2026-09-13 14:16:57 +07:00
9223c9002a An enum is four bytes, and the header check now reads the constants
Two gaps the raylib examples hit.

The layout check compared a Flan enum against the header's `int` and
called it a disagreement. It is not one: Shim.cty lowers a defenum to
int32_t in a struct field exactly as it does in a parameter, which is
what the signature check already knew and the layout check did not. One
predicate now serves both, symmetric, and tolerant of a 32-bit integer
and nothing else -- f64 against the library's float still fails, in the
very struct whose other field is an enum. Camera3D.projection is a
CameraProjection again and rl/camera-projection is gone with it, so
`.projection :perspective` resolves at the construction site.

And generate-c's claim said nothing about a defconst or a defenum
member, so a wrong flag bit was completely silent. `bindings` gained
`enum`, `const` and `constant` lines saying what a Flan constant is
called in C -- the prefix is nowhere in the Flan name, so it is declared
rather than guessed. Nothing goes quiet in either direction: a name the
rule builds and the header lacks is reported, a rule that reaches
nothing is reported, and a defenum with no line is itself a finding,
because otherwise the silence just moves up one level.

clang's dump gives anonymous EnumDecls for every raylib enum and no
value at all for an enumerator written without `= n`, so the constants
are one flat table and the values are counted the way C counts them.
cache_format bumped with the dump type.

fedaec3e18 recur is checked, which is the reason to prefer it over tail calls
There is no TCO here and recur is not a cheaper substitute for one: the
compiler verifies the call is in the loop body's tail position, so the
mistake is a compile error where it was written rather than a stack
overflow somewhere else. A loop is a let, a While whose condition is
true, and two jumps — emit.ml is untouched, and the barrier question
recur asks is the one labelled break already answered.

Tail position is a permission that is withdrawn at the top of check, the
same read-and-withdraw defer_ok does, handed back only by a block's last
form, both arms of an if and a match arm. So nothing enumerates the forms
that are not tails, which a pre-pass over the Ast would have had to, and
would have had to keep doing.

loop is also a barrier for break and continue, which is added rather than
inherited: a loop answers with the value of its body and a jump out has
no value to give. That is also why it takes no label. A while inside a
loop keeps its own break.

Two things the shape forced. A loop binding is a plain name, because
destructuring would make recur's argument count unreadable off the
binding vector. And in_loop's "moves a value bound outside the loop"
rule had to be told about the loop's own names, or (loop [v (vec-new
i32)] ...) would have been refused for doing the ordinary thing.
